The job landscape is shifting, especially as the industry faces a challenging hiring environment. Data from Handshake in August revealed that job postings had declined by 16% year-over-year, even as applications per opening increased by 26%. Despite massive investments in AI, the tech sector has been hit with widespread layoffs in 2025, including companies like Salesforce, Meta, Microsoft, and Amazon. Meanwhile, IBM announced it would be laying off thousands of employees in its global workforce during Q4.
Nevertheless, Puri encourages graduates to see opportunities in industries undergoing digital transformation, such as transportation, manufacturing, and energy. These sectors, he explains, are actively redefining processes and innovation, with software engineers at the forefront. “You are impacting something fundamental to the global economy,” he states, “and it’s not just about technology.”

In a recent interview with CNN, Krishna revealed that IBM plans to boost its hiring of recent college grads, especially for AI-related roles, over the next year.
