How many leotards should a gymnast have? ›

If you prefer washing your gymnastics leotards only once per week, one leotard per gym session is the minimum that your gymnast should be keeping her in wardrobe. Many gymnasts like to also have special themed leotards for holidays and events throughout the year.

Leotards and Kit Costs

Often the designs are unique to the club and mean that the gymnasts are easily identifiable. Training leotards typically cost $50 upwards. The cost of a competition leotard will depend on the gym facility, but a decent competition leotard will be more expensive than a basic training one.

Generally, they need to be a snug fit with no creases, wrinkles, or snags visible when fitted correctly. The close fit design allows freedom of movement and ensures the clothing does not limit its performance.

Getting comfortable in a leotard could take some getting used to because gymnasts don't wear any underwear under them. It's a competition foul to have your bra and underwear exposed, so most gymnasts get comfortable without them.

As dancers get older they may want to minimise the visibility of lines under their leotards and tights. The following are our suggestions for class: plain coloured seam-free briefs (so patterns don't show through) sports or dance bras that match the line of your leotard.

Sports Bra + Shorts/Leggings. Sometimes gymnasts just are not feeling the leotard for conditioning or practice that day. Body adhesives (affectionately referred to as “butt glue” by gymnasts) and special underwear are also options for anti-wedgie reinforcement, but are “not a substitute for a well-fitted leotard,” Diaz says.

Generally, female gymnasts tend to be shorter and lighter than male gymnasts. Female gymnasts can be between 4'6" to 5'6" (137cm to 168cm) and weigh around 45kg to 60kg (99lb to 132lb), while male gymnasts can be between 5'3" to 5'10" (160cm to 178cm) and weigh around 60kg to 70kg (132lb to 154lb).

Wearing unitards instead of leotards isn't against the sport's rules, but it is a break in tradition. The International Gymnastics Federation allows unitards that cover the body from “hip to ankle” as long as they're “of elegant design,” but most women have preferred to stick with standard leotards.
