The 2022 Providence Journal All-State Boys Lacrosse Team
First team
Peter Buonanno
Moses Brown, Junior
Attack
Buonanno made a name for himself as a sophomore and earned his second straight spot on the first-team All-State team after his terrific play this spring. The junior was one of the state’s premier scorers, helping the Quakers advance to another title game. He will enter his senior season as one of the best all-around players in Rhode Island next spring.
Noah Rosa
La Salle, Senior
Attack
A first-team All-Stater as a junior, Rosa continued his growth as a senior andleader for the powerful Rams’ offense. Rosa finished the year with 46 goals and 27 assists, helping La Salle win its 10th straight state title. He’ll play at Providence College next spring.
Nolan Johnson
La Salle, Senior
Attack
On a team with a loaded offense, Johnson had a strong regular season with 21 goals and 17 assists, but he took his game to another level in the postseason. Johnson’s play in the biggest games helped him make his All-State debut and he’ll move on to play at Assumption College next spring.
Thomas Caito
La Salle, Senior
Midfield
Caito was a second-team All State selection last spring but upped his game to new heights to make his debut on the first team. Caito had 23 goals, 32 assists and was a ground-ball machine for the Rams. His play helped La Salle beat rival Moses Brown in the state title game. He’ll play at Bryant University next spring.
Colby Frigon
La Salle, Junior
Midfield
One of the heroes of the Rams’ 2021 state title comeback, Frigon developed into one of the state’s best players this spring. He finished his season with 22 goals and 38 assists as La Salle won its 10th straight state title. Frigon has verbally committed to UMass Lowell and will enter his senior season as one of the state’s best scorers.
Dylan Johnson
La Salle, Senior
Midfield
Johnson more than earned his second straight first-team All-State selection as one of the most dominant midfielders in Rhode Island. Johnson finished the season with 40 goals and had 24 assists and was a dynamic scorer in the postseason, getting four goals and six assists as La Salle won its 10th straight state crown.
Anthony DiCenso
La Salle, Senior
Face-off
No one dominated theposition quite like DiCenso, the 2022 Providence Journal Player of the Year. He owned the face-off, winning 180 out of 222 draws and was 47 of 58 in the state playoffs, where he also scored a goal and had three assists, helping La Salle win another state title.
Luke Mead
Hendricken, Senior
Long Stick Midfield
A proven commodity coming into this spring, the now two-time first-team All-Stater didn’t disappoint. Mead’s physical strengths were obvious, but his mental approach on the defensive side of the field made scoring on the Hawks a difficult task. Mead won’t stray far from home, continuing his education and playing career at Bryant next spring.
Henry Alessandro
Moses Brown, Junior
Defense
Another year, another All-State appearance for the Quakers’ star. Alessandro wasn’t the type of defender to just sit back; he went out and made plays, casting an imposing shadow and providing a physicality that kept offenses at bay all spring long.
Hayden Almeida
La Salle, Junior
Defense
While the Rams had plenty of firepower on offense, Almeida’s play on the other side of the field certainly stood out. There were few players in Rhode Island that Almeida couldn’t lock down and he helped make La Salle’s defensethe best in the state. Hewill anchor it again as the team goes for an 11th straight title next spring.
Tim Votta
East Greenwich, Senior
Defense
It can be hard to stand out in a sport dominated by the state’s top two teams, but Votta had little trouble doing that. Votta, a first-time All-State selection, helped East Greenwich make the playoffs this spring with his play in the back. He’ll take the field next spring for the University of Hartford.
Max Ayotte
La Salle, Junior
Goalie
A first-year starter, Ayotte didn’t look out of place in the net at all this spring. His play this season — a 62-save percentage — only solidified an already stout defense. Ayotte will come back next spring and look to be even better.
